Being a sighthound, Whippets are full of excitement and keenness at lure coursing or racing events. First developed as a breed in North England for chasing rabbits, they were also known as the "poor man's race horse" and were used as racing dogs. They are swift with speeds up to 35 mph, beautiful and graceful with full intent upon bringing down their prey.

Looking very much like a greyhound, but in miniature, the Whippet renders a mild and meek appearance. However, they are surprisingly quick to guard their home when a stranger appears.

At home Whippets are intelligent, devoted, quiet, and well mannered with an elegance about them unmatched by any other breed of dog. They are clean, easily trained, sensitive, and quite the individual. Independent but usually willing to please, this is a very versatile dog for the conformation or obedience ring to lure coursing to racing or just as a couch potato. This beautiful and gentle animal is a wonderful addition to any family.
