Inspection Committee

The Inspection Committee consists of three persons who conduct Roll Call at the time listed in the premium list, in order to determine that all hounds entered in the trial are present and physically sound.

Any hound not actually present in the area designated for Roll Call at the time of Roll Call must be scratched and thus cannot compete in the trial. Roll Call may be conducted in the "running order" (usually alphabetical, by breed), but any order is acceptable as long as all hounds are accounted for by the end of Roll Call.

As each entry is announced from the Roll Call Sheet (previously provided to the Inspection Committee by the Field Trial Secretary after the close of entries), the hound is examined for lameness by being gaited at a brisk walk for a short distance towards, and for a short distance away from, the inspectors. All bitches entered must also be examined to determine if any are in season and regardless of whether they are represented to the inspectors as having been spayed! (Unlike conformation point shows, spayed bitches and neutered dogs are eligible to compete in performance events such as lure coursing trials and obedience trials. Monorchid dogs are ineligible to compete, however, in A.K.C. coursing events, although monorchid dogs may compete in A.S.F.A. trials.) Finally, all hounds whose official American Kennel Club breed standards list breed disqualifications must be examined for those disqualifications at both A.S.F.A. and A.K.C. coursing events. These breeds include Pharaoh Hounds (coat color disqualification), Rhodesian Ridgebacks (ridgelessness), Scottish Deerhounds (coat color disqualification), and Whippets ( bite and eye color disqualifications, and size and coat type disqualifications). There are no breed disqualifications listed for the other sighthound breeds.

Any hound found by the Inspection Committee to have a breed disqualification, to be lame prior to competing in the trial, or any bitch found to be in season must be reported to the Field Chairperson immediately at the time of Roll Call. This hound is barred from competition at the trial and its entry fee will be refunded by the Field Trial Secretary by check within 90 days after the trial.

Following the conclusion of Roll Call, the Inspection Committee must remain available throughout the trial to report to the Field Chairman on the condition of any hound subsequently injured on the field, in order to determine whether the hound may continue to compete if sound or whether it must be withdrawn if lame. The trial entry fee is not refunded for a hound withdrawn during competition for unsoundness by the Field Chairman upon recommendation by the Inspection Committee.

Finally, the Inspection Committee also must remain available throughout the trial to investigate any observed or reported aggressiveness of any hound or abuse or mistreatment of any hound on the trial grounds during the posted trial hours (including all non-entered hounds present, but excluding hounds competing on the field in a course then in progress). As with their findings at Roll Call, the findings of the Inspection Committee as to their inspections during the trial must be reported to the Field Chairman, whose decision could result in barring a hound (or human) from further competition or participation in the trial.
