Cosequin and Glyco-Flex
GAGs are one category of chondroprotective agents (CPA's) that are used to treat and prevent osteoarthritis. Promotional literature for two such brand name products, Cosequin and Glyco-Flex, goes into greater detail. Both of these products claim benefits beyond the narrow definition of osteoarthritis through their effects on connective tissues.
This use of CPA's is a promising new option for the management of degenerative joint disorders. The treatment for these conditions may vary, but traditionally almost always includes the use of steroids or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's). With repeated usage NSAID's are know to damage chrondrocytes and eventually worsen the condition. In contrast, CPA's stimulate chondrocyte metabolism and inhibit enzymes capable of degrading articular cartilage matrix. In so doing, CPA's protect the cartilage. In addition to degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis), CPA's may help a number of other conditions such as hip dysplasia, non-specific arthritis, osteochondritis desicans, spondylitis, discospondylitis, lameness and joint inflammation.
Anecdotal "evidence", both first and second hand, indicates success for numerous dogs treated with cosequin. It is a large capsule which may be fed directly to the dog or opened and the powder mixed with food. Cosequin is extremely expensive, in excess of $600.00 a year for an 80 pound dog. Glyco-Flex is much less expensive, about $180.00 a year for a 90 pound dog; however, the anecdotal evidence of success is less consistent for Glyco-Flex than for Cosequin. Both oral products are food additives and are not known to have any detrimental side effects.
