Basenjis

Basenjis, popularly known as the "barkless dog", are one of the oldest known breeds. A native of Africa, this hound was a popular present to the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt.

The Basenji is about half the size and build of a Fox Terrier with a silky coat the color of burnished copper. Other features include a wrinkled forehead, prick ears, and dark, intelligent eyes.

A Basenji has a coat that is short and fine. Their skin is very pliant. Coat color ranges from Chestnut-red, pure black, tricolor or brindle. All have white feet, chest and tail tip. White legs, blaze and collar are optional. The amount of white should never predominate over primary color. Color and markings should be rich, clear and well-defined with a distinct line of demarcation between the black and red of tricolors and the stripes of brindles.

As a hunter, the Basenji excels in pointing, retrieving and driving game into nets. As a home pet, the Basenji is a playful and obedient companion with the unique habit of cleaning itself like a cat.

With respect to temperament, a Basenji is intelligent, independent, affectionate and very alert. A Basenji can be aloof with strangers.
