Afghans are sturdy coursing hounds with extremely fine, longhaired coats. The breed is primarily a coursing hound, pursuing its quarry by sight and followed by huntsman, Oftentimes, the Afghan hunted "on their own" giving rise to their independence of thought and spirit. An extremely wide variety of game including mountain deer, plains antelopes and hares, have been hunted by Afghans.

As coursing hounds, Afghans excel in their ability to traverse rough terrain swiftly and sure-footedly. Their agility in leaping and quickness in turning combined with the stamina to maintain a chase make this hound an outstanding courser.
